And, while we try with everything in us by using precautionary techniqes and strategies to avoid these dreaded mishaps, as we know, because we are human... it happens.
Yesterday, as the head of the company, it happen to me. Today, because the issue has been resolved, I can say I am glad it happened. It served as an example to the rest of the team that mistakes happen, but above all, no matter how big or small, we exercise integrity, and report the incident. Not only do we take accountability for it, but we resolve the matter in a professional manner, with sincere remorse, and willingness to correct the fault.
At Cleanercession, we stress the importance of carefully handling our clients property, and reporting mistakes or accidents. We are not the judge of the imortance of the items or fixtures that might have been damaged or broken. Beyond that, honesty and integrity are two of our core values, and crucial that our clients can trust that we possess these values.
While I can empathize with my team, knowing the feeling of breaking someones belonging's, as it took place with me yesterday (shattering an entire window), not only is it our obligation to report, and replace or repair, but this also helps establish trust with our cleints. I never want my team to feel like they can not be honest, especially in a situation such as this, with the fear of being harshly treated, or losing their job. We try to avoid it, but mistakes are inevitable. With this in mind, we stress that it is better to take reposnsibilty for your actions than to try to sweep it under the rug, and it is later found out. As the bible says, everything done in the dark comes to light, and I have found this to be so true in my years on this earth. To try to conceal a matter when making it known is appropriate is just flat out deceitful, and wrong.
So, I am glad it happened. In the moment, I felt horrible. I prayed, Father, please let this be something that can be fixed as soon as possible, and please let it not be too expensive. Thank the Lord, my prayer was answered. By the time we were finished cleaning the empty unit that was being prepared for the general property manager of the complex, the window glass was repalced, and back on the track - in place! As an added bonus, it was not too expensive, thank God!
While I hated the feeling of making such a huge mistake, failing my cleint in that moment, embarrassed for potentially being viewed as careless or unprofessional, I am beyond grateful that it all worked out. Again, it was an opportunity to demonstrate integrity, and an experience to learn from. Now, we have better technique for placing windows aside while cleaning the tracks, and prayerfully built trust with our beloved cleint.
